(some do not recognize the genus Alcolapia and refer to this species as an Oreochromis)
This species belongs to a unique group of small-sized cichlids endemic to the Rift Valley "soda lakes" found in Kenya and Tanzania. These lakes possess very alkaline and saline waters with temps. approaching 30-32 deg. C.! However, their adaptability allows these mouthbrooding species to be kept in aquaria (quite successfully) under less-hostile conditions. It should also be noted that these cichlids are usually found near the edges of the lakes and the springs that feed them. A. alcalicus is native to Lake Natron, but there are reports of it being introduced into other nearby lakes.
